Slow is Better
Our top travel secret is not really a secret, but it takes a while for some of us to learn and apply. Here it is: Slow down. Afremmen and spending more time in each location is not only a secret of cheap travel, but in our experience, it means more fun.
Afremmen for cheap travel
We returned yesterday (August 13, 2007) from a ten-day road trip, and I can tell you that is slower saved us money, because it usually does. This is not just about driving less, but when we started driving 200 miles in a day instead of 600 we certainly saved on gas. But we also believe that with time on our hands, we can do a better job shopping for a place to stay or eat. Make the big mile days by the person who seeks boring. When you an interesting place to find fun, affordable lodging and stick around for a while. Once, while driving across the country from our campsite, we discovered hot springs in a wild part of Arizona, with picknicktafels and bathrooms and desert hills to explore - everything we needed at that time. It costs only € 3 per night, so it was easy to stay a while.
In fact, we stayed for eight days, to enjoy the hot baths, even during an unusual snowy day in the desert. We have daily walks and hunted for antiques and rocks in the surrounding hills, but more on that in a moment. Only once, we went to the nearest town for shopping and water, so that the whole eight days would have cost us $ 80 or so. That is cheap travel.
Five years ago we stumbled into a large mountain city where we wanted to stay for a while. We were in the city sooner, rather than our usual drive of the day and scrambling to find a hotel, so we had time to check things without rushing. We asked around and heard about a hotel above a cafe. The rest of the rooms in the city were generally $ 60 per night, but we were given a room above the pub for $ 120 - for a whole week. It had a stove and a refrigerator, so we could cook our own meals when we wanted to save more.
Afremmen means better travel experiences
Even more important than the fact that slowing down means cheap travel, is the fact that if you go slowly you discover things that you would have missed. While at the hot springs above, for example, we have a friendly Maya Indian who brought us to an old Pony Express station in the desert hills. It is still parts of the ancient walls.
He showed us areas where we could find old arrowheads, and we found some. In the middle of the desert, he showed us that had perfect round holes drilled in the rock hundreds of years earlier. They were used for the storage of water. In our van, we followed him to an area where ancient pottery littered the desert, and where gems could be found as well.
